Vita Daniel Spornitz

Daniel Spornitz was born in 1960, in Göttingen (Germany). He grew up in Kassel (Germany), and has lived in Vienna (Austria) for the last 25 years.
Since childhood, he has been fascinated and inspired by the artistic scene. His father is a painter, was a successful set designer, and was a professor at the School of Arts and Crafts in Kassel.

His mother was the head of the “dokumenta” organization office and later headed the “dokumenta” archives. Marlou and Arnold Bode (dokumenta founders) were close friends of the Spornitz family.

Daniel Spornitz first translated his own ideas into the language of art in the 70’s and 80’s.
The result is seen in various cycles of work, done in mixed techniques, which captivate each viewer in different ways. At once refined, reflective and spontaneous, these works are convincing in their effects on each individual.

His next creative period was dedicated predominantly to meticulous, masterly and precisely drawn pen work, and he developed a sure eye for the essentials, and transposed these in detail with his pen. At first glance, the drawings resemble photographs, and only slowly do they reveal the precision of the pen work.
Color is not necessary, in order to reflect the moods of the individual pictures. Every stroke of the pen has been well-considered, and done neatly and tidily, to achieve the desired effect of the whole composition.

Not only constantly searching for new motifs to incorporate into his creations, Mr. Spornitz also dedicates his time to several other art projects. He works in the promotion team of “dokumenta 7“, along with various artists, and is a contemporary witness to a number of anecdotes involving, among others, Joseph Beuys and Mario Merz.
Then, he and E. Kersting came up with and implemented the idea of the “longest gallery in the world“, an exhibition of over 300 works, by different artists, in the shop windows along the long, straight, pedestrian zone in Kassel (opened officially by Dr. Hans Eichl). This new form of gallery was later also successful in other cities, such as Berlin.

In addition to his artistic studies in Vienna and Switzerland, Daniel Spornitz also studied business management theory, and founded his own agency in 1988.
His work in recent years can be classified almost exclusively under“computer aided painting” and graphics.
These works are produced in his own atelier, using proof-screens and large format printers, with corresponding color management.

His most recent works, in particular, display a trend towards the mysterious, always both surprising the viewer, and making a lasting impression.

It isn’t possible to compartmentalize the Daniel Spornitz oeuvre, and that is exactly why his pictures offer us something new and unique. Between abstraction and figuration, the interplay of technique and color, he creates and develops his own picture world. Without a doubt, his contribution to the contemporary art scene is of considerable significance.
